Florida Health Information Network Grants Program

Announcements and
Schedules

In May 2006, the development of a statewide health information network and integration of State health care databases was mandated under House Bill 7073. The Legislature provided $2 million in funding for the Florida Health Information Network Grants Program in FY 2007-2008 and 2006-2007 and $1.5 million in FY 2005-2006.

Funding this program has spurred local communities to develop local health information exchanges by drawing on donations, volunteers, and grant funding.  Groups of stakeholders interested in developing health information exchange have formed organizations called Regional Health Information Organizations (RHIOs) representing many health care stakeholders including providers, employers, insurers, community groups, public health officials, and State Universities.  Although in the initial phases of development, three RHIOs (Big Bend RHIO, Palm Beach Community Health Care Alliance, and Tampa Bay RHIO) are currently operating networks that can be accessed by hospitals and physicians participating in the RHIO.  An additional four organizations have received FHIN grants and these RHIOs will begin to exchange data within their network in 2007.

Finally in June 2006, three FHIN Operations Grants began transferring patient data to initiate health information exchange in Tallahassee, Tampa, and Palm Beach County.
