Health and Human Services Eligibility Access System Project

2-1-1 Network Implemented in Florida

The number 2-1-1 is a simple, easy-to-remember number for residents to call (or access on the web) when they want to find out how to give or receive help in a community. It works similar to the way 911 Emergency Service works in that 2-1-1 may be dialed from anywhere in the nation and the call will be automatically routed to a local government office that provides 2-1-1 services to the public.

The national abbreviated dialing code makes it easier for people in need to navigate the complex maze of health and human services' agencies and programs and provides the caller with free access to information and referral services such as food banks, shelters, rent assistance, utility assistance, drug and alcohol intervention and rehabilitation.

In 2002, Senate Bill 1276 was passed and created legislation that will establish rules and regulations that set standards for issuing 2-1-1 numbers and recalling them. Previously, anyone could obtain the number without specific standards or qualifications.
